Meta Expands AI Chat Capabilities to Threads Direct Messages

Meta on Monday said it is rolling out its Meta AI chatbot within Threads’ DMs, giving users a way to chat with the AI assistant.

Although Threads users in select markets could already interact with Meta AI in public posts, like people can with Grok on X, this new integration lets users talk with the AI assistant privately.

By giving users an easier way to talk to an AI chatbot, Meta is looking to keep users within its ecosystem, with an eye toward discouraging them from using third-party assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google Gemini.

Meta AI is already available within DMs on Meta’s other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The latest update enables Threads users to share posts, images, videos, and links directly with Meta AI during private conversations. Users can also ask follow-up questions, allowing for more detailed and interactive discussions with the AI assistant.

According to Meta, the feature will begin rolling out to users worldwide starting Monday.

The company also stated that it is still testing Meta AI within Threads’ public feeds in a limited number of international markets while gathering user feedback before expanding the feature more broadly. To give users greater control over their experience, Meta has introduced options to reduce AI-generated content in their feeds. Users can mute @meta.ai, mark Meta AI posts as “Not Interested,” or hide AI-generated replies that appear on their own posts
