Private Sector

The private sector is essential in safeguarding the financial system by identifying and preventing activities related to money laundering, terrorist financing, and the proliferation financing of weapons of mass destruction.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) continually analyzes emerging and evolving techniques used by criminals to launder illicit funds and by terrorists to generate, transfer, and utilize financial resources. Through its typology reports, the FATF informs both government authorities and private sector organizations about vulnerabilities in specific industries, products, and services, enabling them to implement appropriate risk mitigation measures.

The FATF Recommendations provide a comprehensive framework that countries can use to strengthen their financial systems against money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing. To support the effective implementation of these standards, the FATF has developed extensive guidance documents and best practice resources for regulators, financial institutions, and other private sector stakeholders.

A key principle of the FATF framework is the Risk-Based Approach (RBA), which ensures that anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing measures are proportionate to the level of risk identified. Working closely with relevant industries, the FATF has produced guidance to help both public authorities and private sector entities apply the RBA effectively. The organization is also updating its RBA guidance to ensure alignment with the latest FATF Recommendations while incorporating lessons learned from implementation by governments and businesses over the years.
